Overview
Join professional wildlife photographer Ken Anderson for an unforgettable five-day Bald Eagle photography experience based at the spectacular Nanook Lodge on Stuart Island, British Columbia.
From May through mid-July, millions of Pacific hake move through the waters of the Discovery Islands. During each tide cycle, powerful currents concentrate large schools of hake in the tide rips and force them toward the surface. This creates one of Canada's greatest wildlife spectacles as hundreds of Bald Eagles gather to feed.
Eagles dive from the sky, skim the water with their talons, snatch fish from the surface, battle in mid-air over their catch, and provide photographers with nonstop action and unforgettable image opportunities.
Unlike tours that travel daily from Campbell River, we stay at Nanook Lodge on Stuart Island, right in the heart of the action. Being based at the lodge means less travel time and more time photographing. Some days, we are able to photograph two tide cycles, providing two exceptional Bald Eagle photography sessions in a single day. We are also ideally located to explore nearby mainland inlets where Black Bears are frequently encountered between eagle sessions.
With only 8 photographers, divided between two custom Zodiac boats with just 4 photographers per boat, everyone enjoys plenty of room to shoot, unobstructed angles, and personalized instruction throughout the workshop.
This workshop is designed for photographers looking for spectacular Bald Eagle action, incredible wildlife encounters, small groups, and one of the finest wilderness photography experiences on the British Columbia coast.
Why This Tour Is Different
Several Bald Eagle workshops operate throughout May to July. What separates this workshop is our location.
Our base at Nanook Lodge on Stuart Island places us much closer to the primary photography locations than operators travelling daily from Campbell River.
This provides several significant advantages:
More time photographing and less time travelling.
Access to both morning and afternoon tide cycles on many days, often allowing two productive Bald Eagle photography sessions each day.
Greater flexibility to adjust our schedule around changing tides, weather, and wildlife activity. We have options to go before breakfast or after dinner if the tides dictate it. Benefits of our base being 5 minutes from the action.
Easy access to nearby mainland inlets where Black Bears are frequently photographed feeding between eagle sessions.
Comfortable lodge accommodations just minutes from many of our photography locations.

Our schedule follows the tides to maximize Bald Eagle activity. On many days we photograph two tide cycles, allowing two productive eagle photography sessions in a single day.
Between eagle sessions we often explore nearby mainland inlets where Black Bears are frequently seen feeding along the shoreline.

Guests stay at the beautiful Nanook Lodge on Stuart Island.
The lodge offers comfortable private bedrooms, outstanding meals, and immediate access to our photography locations.
Group Size
This workshop is limited to only 8 photographers.
Photography is conducted using Nanook Lodge's custom Zodiac boats, with only 4 photographers per boat.
Having just four photographers in each Zodiac provides significantly more room to move, unobstructed shooting positions, and excellent opportunities to photograph fast Bald Eagle action from either side of the boat.
Combined with experienced boat operators who understand wildlife photography, this setup provides an exceptional experience throughout the workshop.

Physical Requirements
Participants should be comfortable:
Walking on docks and uneven surfaces.
Boarding and exiting Zodiac boats.
Standing while photographing for extended periods.
Carrying their camera equipment.
Spending long days on the water in varying weather conditions.
Although the waters around Stuart Island are often relatively protected, there can be rough conditions at times. If you are prone to seasickness or do not enjoy spending extended periods in small boats, this is not the photography tour for you. You should expect to spend several hours at a time on the water each day while photographing wildlife.

This tour involves accommodations, transportation, and other arrangements that require non-refundable advance commitments.

This agreement outlines the inherent risks associated with wildlife photography in remote environments, affirms that you are responsible for your own personal safety at all times, and includes a commitment to protecting sensitive wildlife locations. You may also need to sign a waiver for the hosting local lodge / operation partnered with Ken Anderson Photography.
